A Dose of Positive Psychology for Psychiatry
by Samantha Boardman

This presentation combines my experience and training in psychiatry with what I have learned from the field of positive psychology.  It is a discussion of the potential ways psychiatrists can integrate positive psychology into their practice and, more broadly, how positive psychology enhances our understanding of the full range of human experience.  Using the “tools” of positive psychology, psychiatrists can expand their range of treatment options and better engage patients in the treatment process.  With this in mind, a psychiatrist’s goal is two-fold:

(1) to treat the patient’s symptoms
and
(2) to increase the patient’s well-being.

Positive psychology can help psychiatrists achieve this.

This presentation will be part of symposium 84, Positive Psychiatry and Resilience at the American Psychiatric Association 167th Annual Meeting.

It is possible for both  members and non-members to register for a single day of the overall meeting.  See the registration site for more information.
