Bio
I am an associate teaching professor at University of Missouri - Kansas City. Currently I teach introductory managerial accounting and graduate level business reporting and analysis as well as strategic cost management. I also have a blast advising Beta Alpha Psi, the accounting honorary.
Previously, I was Director of Research at the Institute of Management Accountants (IMA) until early 2023. I wrote two SMAs on both design thinking and creative problem solving.
My research interests are in creativity, well being, and future of work. I am currently writing a book on how creative mavericks solve business problems.
Prior to my current position, I spent 30+ years as an accounting educator, a recipient of the 2018 Cook Prize, the foremost recognition for a professor who demonstrates superior teaching in accounting.
I've also received awards in accounting education including the 2019 “best teaching paper” award for the AAA Ohio Region for a paper on serendipity in accounting, the 2010 Bea Sanders/AICPA, the 2011 Howard Theall, and the 2012 George Krull/Grant Thornton innovation in accounting education awards.
In 2014, I had the pleasure of serving as a Visiting Faculty Scholar at Harvard to pioneer neuro accounting research. In 2019, I was a Visiting Scholar at the International Center for Creativity at Buffalo State. I developed a study to upskill workers in innovative problem-solving techniques. In spring 2029, I was at UMass-Lowell as a Visiting Scholar and at Harvard taking classes and working on a study related to “the future of work.”
I enjoy speaking at both academic and professional conferences on the topics of design thinking, ethics, happiness, and education.
I have returned to academia as a teaching professor, returning to my passion to teach students accounting at UMKC.
