Title
Onward and Upward: Promoting Resilience and Well-being in Education
Abstract
Everyone faces adversity. From the harrowing threat to the everyday inconvenience, the type and intensity of the challenges people encounter vary greatly. How people react to adversity varies greatly as well. Some people manage to grow and flourish, while others respond less adaptively. Resilience is the process by which people achieve positive outcomes in spite of adversity. This paper reviews the psychological construct of resilience, explores the relationship between resilience and well-being, provides case studies of resilience in action, discusses the measurement of resilience in children and adolescents, considers the prospects for cultivating
resilience in schools, and ends by imagining how Pearson, an educational products and services
company, could help make resilience and well-being a more intentional aspect of education on a global scale. By drawing upon evidence-based best practices from across the overlapping domains of social and emotional learning (SEL), positive youth development (PYD) and the emerging field of positive education, we can synthesize whole school and, indeed, whole community approaches to raising more resilient learners, who will lead happier, healthier, and more accomplished lives as a result.
