Bio
Donna, an executive in the Internet industry for over two decades, is co-founder and an executive at Positive Voices, an online platform whose mission is to help people increase their happiness, find meaning and achieve their goals. Positive Voices showcases leading experts who bring cutting-edge tips and practices rising from the research in positive psychology and related social sciences. Content is delivered via video, audio, online tools and blogs.

Donna’s leadership experience includes driving marketing programs and forming strategic multi-million-dollar partnerships in high-tech companies (including Optiview Technologies, Netscape Communication, and PSINet). Donna is also a co-founder of Positive Business DC, a 700-member organization dedicated to informing and inspiring leaders across the Metro DC region to increase well-being in the workplace.

During her career, Donna was devoted to building stellar teams and understanding what made them tick. She discovered that much of what makes people happy could also lead to productivity, innovation, resourcefulness, comradery and resilience for when the inevitable challenges arose. While at MAPP, Donna had an a-ha moment. Over a cup of coffee with a long-time friend, they pieced together Donna’s purpose from years of discussion: to help people improve their lives by understanding and practicing the behaviors that enable community. Bam! Everything Donna had learned over the years in her work and at MAPP seemed to align. Now, with the launch of Positive Voices, she is finally able to integrate her past experience and interests with her passion for increasing well-being in the world. Donna’s favorite pastime: spending time with her husband and two children investigating the world.

Gracious Mindset: Practicing Respectful Interpretations

Competition in organizations is embraced as a fundamental element of success. As businesses champion the need to win, employees often compete with their own teammates, sometimes creating a culture of distrust and zero-sum solutions. But increasingly scholars are recognizing the need to focus on the relational aspects of organizations, which have been shown to deliver many benefits including those associated with increased positive affect and better working relationships.

This paper explores a singular relational behavior, that of giving others the benefit of the doubt. To this end, I introduce the construct of Gracious Mindset (GM) as a mindset to consciously practice, when endeavoring to give others the benefit of the doubt, assuming a respectful interpretation of the other’s intent or motivation in situations where the benefits outweigh the risks. I explore this concept in the context of an organization and the relevant enabling aspects including psychological safety, civility, humility, perspective taking, trust, optimistic explanatory style, compassion, and forgiveness.
