My Story

The Change I Want to See in the World
I've always wondered how me as an individual can help alleviate all the different sufferings in the world. After years of searching for answers and trying different things in the education and corporate domains, I realize that perhaps my "sweet spot" would be through the dissemination of positive psychology.

Specifically, I hope to see a world where everybody, especially young people, leaders of our future, are taught to understand how to live a meaningful life with purpose. They are taught to appreciate the essence of their own being and know how to leverage that to live a fulfilling life that also makes a difference for the world.
Books That Greatly Influenced My Life
Chicken Soup for the Soul (in my younger years); Nowadays it's mostly books on existential psychology (e.g. Irvin Yalom) and narrative psychology
Fun Facts About Me
I love karaoke.
The only kinds of chips I eat is Kettle's Krinkle Cut - only the black pepper and sea salt favour.
I did fail my (Canadian) class 5 road tests a few times but I think I am a good driver now.
I came to Canada when I was 20 and haven't left. I hope to try out other places and be able to work in my mother tongue one day!

Personal information

Bio
I am an executive coach and leadership consultant passionate about helping professionals and organizations create lives and organizations that matter. Prior to my career pivot into consulting, I spent 5 years coaching and working in higher education supporting MBA students. Before that, I have over 15 years of experience in human resources and marketing in retail and telecommunications. This experience, combined by my eclectic interests and curiosity, informs the multidisciplinary, system and evidence-based approach of the strategies I recommend.

I care about using a multidisciplinary approach such as technology, arts and culture, appreciative inquiry, design thinking, systems thinking to reinvent conventional leadership and organizational development practices, and applying positive psychology to improve the resilience of young people and our workforce as a way to create a thriving community and combat the impact of mental illness.

Building a more just, equitable and sustainable world is important to me. In addition to continuously honing my craft as an executive coach and leadership expert, I also have been developing my expertise in cultivating responsible leadership and addressing our sustainability challenges through psychological science, mainly a confluence of positive psychology, organizational psychology and environmental psychology.

My coaching areas of expertise include:

- Resilience, career reinvention, storytelling, identity, meaning & purpose, values
- Organization: Culture (organization's values and purpose), talent and leadership development, emotional intelligence, Appreciative Inquiry

Having spent the first 20 years of my life in Shantou and Shanghai, China, I am now based in Vancouver, Canada and serve clients in English, Mandarin, Cantonese and my native dialect Chiu Chow (Teochew).

When I am not working, you will find me globe-trotting, singing my heart out in local karaoke joints, or getting lost in unique neighbourhoods taking street photos.

The Protagonist: Using Artificial Intelligence & Storytelling to
Make Value-Based Career Decisions

Choosing what career to pursue is an important life decision for many. For students in higher education, career indecision can be a major source of anxiety. Values play an essential role in helping one clarify their identity and find a meaningful career that is aligned with one’s authentic self. After a review of the limitations of existing quantitative value clarification tools and explicating the benefits of its qualitative and narrative-based alternatives, this paper proposes a technology-empowered value discovery intervention in the form of a smartphone application (and companion site) that aims to promote and semi-automate the value discovery and mobilization process and bolster the career decision-making and well-being of college students. A proposal for the app is presented in the context of the theories and practices that support its design. A brief review of the technological capabilities that enable text analysis automation would also be discussed.
