Capstone title and abstract
Meaning in Practice: The Current and Future Relevance of Meaning in America Through a review of preeminent literature on the topic, this essay evaluates the mechanics of meaning and possible future applications of meaning in American society. The first part of the document examines the anatomy of meaning. Meaning can be linked to common life domains and realized through several unique human faculties, or dimensions. While these dimensions work collaboratively, research illustrates evidence of a hierarchy among them whereby cognition presides over motivation and affect in governing the benefits of the meaning experience. Meaning is further influenced by the nature of our cognitions as either constructed internally or discovered externally. The second half of the essay proposes that meaning be brought to the forefront of our social consciousness, having been historically confined to negative domains of application. Beneath the umbrella of positive psychology’s invigorated pursuit of the good life, we must encourage a more thoughtful and purposeful approach to meaning. To that end, lifespan research suggests that we target the cultivation of meaning in our youth through proactive educational initiatives. Meanwhile, the field of human services must continue its efforts to promote meaning-based therapies, the most promising of which being the emerging Meaning-centered Counseling.
