Bio
Focusing on the possible has been fundamental throughout my varied professional career. Moving from healthcare and science to the arts and the artistic has provided a right and left-brain admixture in my work.

I made the jump from oncology research nurse to designer and sales manager for several fashion design companies to assisting and coaching the CEO of Applegate and coordinating the Senior Leadership Team. As Executive Director of a generously supported family foundation I influenced both the mission and grantee choices with a social justice focus. This included groups seeking to end the death penalty, meditation in prisons, education for girls in Haiti, immigration groups, even the renovation of a Buddhist temple in Bhutan. I continued my career as Managing Director of a contemporary arts center, helping to develop the mission statement, buying and developing properties where we created art galleries, an artist residency program, and performing arts space for music, cinema, giant puppetry, and dance-all with the filter of positive psychology in “revealing the transformational power of art.”

Recently, I have worked as a Positive Psychology educator through classes and workshops and am presently developing a Well-Being workbook and seminar.

Capstone title and abstract
Positive Health and Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) in the Oncology Population: A Pathway of Wholeness

Abstract: Individuals with cancer would benefit from the design of an integrative health plan collaboratively designed and research driven. The plan, built on the bedrock of positive health, would incorporate five modules including mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR). This capstone addresses the emergence of positive health as a new scientific field born out of positive psychology and explores the empirical roots of MBSR as a positive intervention in the oncology population. Positive health is based on the premise that health is a proactive process building strengths and resources rather than merely the absence of disease. Stress, impactful on health and well-being, can be both adaptive and harming depending on how it is perceived. MBSR, an exemplar of mindfulness meditation, provides a process of perception promoting new patterns of behaviors that are more responsive than reactive. Research in positive psychology, positive health and MBSR demonstrates that all promote psycho-physiological health and well-being. Well-being is an integrative process recognized as wholeness. This paper provides the foundation for the development of a strengths-based counseling business working with the oncology population utilizing positive interventions.
