Weaving Appreciative Inquiry into Everyday Conversations

Maureen McKenna

Appreciative Inquiry practitioner, Maureen (Mo) McKenna will introduce simple ways to positively energize and engage people at work. Come and explore how to weave Appreciative Inquiry philosophy and assumptions into into all your conversation, focusing on:

• Positive Reframing and

• Generative Questions

She will introduce her simple, yet powerful, AIR framework (Appreciating and learning from the past; Imagining a shared and desirable future; and Reflecting and taking action in the present). Mo will share stories of how the AIR framework has been used in healthcare, education, not for profit and business. Some examples will address coaching, performance issues, getting your three-year old to bed and other practical conversations.

Over the last 20 years, Mo has used Appreciative Inquiry (AI) as the operating system for her consulting business. She has designed and facilitated more than 100 AI summits with groups of 50 to more than 1,000. She began teaching AI in 2001 with her mentor Jane Magruder Watkins, author of the best-selling AI practitioner book, Appreciative Inquiry: Change at the Speed of Imagination.

In 2014, Mo began to consider the possibility that the low employee engagement reported in organizations might be caused by an unhealthy work climate fueled by negative energy. She then created a management consulting business called Return On Energy. Her practice is based on research from the Center for Positive Organizations, focusing on how to create a healthy work climate fueled by an abundance mentality.

Mo was the Conference Chair in 2014 for the Canadian Positive Psychology Association (CPPA) Conference. She is a member of the Global Council of Practitioner for the Cooperrider Center for Appreciative Inquiry. She is also a member of the TAOS Institute and the Adler Coaching alumni. She grew up in Scotland and has called Toronto, Canada her home since 1975.

Mo’s top VIA strengths are: Creativity; Humor, Love of learning, Gratitude; and Honesty.
