Exploring the Role of Environmental Coherence in the Experience of Meaning

Samantha J. Heintzelman, Doctoral Candidate,

University of Missouri

Overview: This session will review work Ms. Heintzelman is doing with Dr. Laura King on the important role that coherence (order, pattern, structure, routine, and habit) plays in the experience of meaning in life. She will discuss a recent perspective on meaning that seeks to answer broad theoretical questions regarding the experience of meaning in life. What function do feelings of meaning serve?  What information is provided by a sense of meaning?  How does this information influence an individual’s interactions with the world?  In addition, she will present the latest research findings in this area including her forthcoming work examining the previously unnoted potential for regularity in behaviorsundefinedfrom watching TV to drinking coffee and even smokingundefinedto make life feel meaningful.

This cutting-edge CPE will cover current theory and research on meaning in life with an orientation toward the implications this work might have for applied domains of interest to MAPPsters - coaching, education, management, etc.
